Name tags present a great way to reinforce counting skills in younger students. As the kids put on their tags at the beginning of the day, ask them to count the letters in their name. Designate a gathering spot for students with the same number of letters. Once they have found their group, you can expand on the lesson in a variety of ways, including:
- Create a class graph or chart with the information
- Reinforce “greater than” and “less than” by comparing group sizes
- Have each group create a poster showcasing their number
- Give the students base-10 blocks and ask them to build their number
3. Number of the Day
Name tags can foster a fun atmosphere if you turn them into a game. Choose a mystery “number of the day” and ask the students to figure it out based on their name tag. Each name tag should represent the number differently. For example, if the mystery number is 150, one name tag might say, “50 x 3” or “180-30.” Another might use base-10 blocks or a hundreds chart to illustrate the number. Once the students have deciphered the number of the day, sort them into small groups and have each group solve all of the problems on their tags.
